Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert made some news last week when he announced his departure from Double Fine, following the release of The Cave. As he took his leave, Gilbert announced a that he was already at work on a new game. Thanks to a post on his blog yesterday, we now know a little bit more about that ambitiously titled new game -- Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG. Yes, that's the real title.

And whew, that was a lot to type out... better use an acronym: SSITVTDTUSS:AMMTPRPG. Nope. That doesn't help either. Let's just go with Scurvy Scallywags instead.

So what exactly is Scurvy Scallywags going to be about? In traditional match-3 games, the new pieces usually fall in from the top after you've matched them. But in Scurvy Scallywags, the board will collapse on itself from the direction you swipe, resulting in new pieces that could be coming from the sides, bottom, or the top.

In his post, Gilbert says that Scurvy Scallywags will have, "close to 100 different hats, shirts, heads, and swords to find and use to dress up your pirate. There are also ten different ships to build, plus a sea shanty you collect that is sung by real-life pirate singers."

If Gilbert sticks to his schedule, look for the game to be in the App Store sometime next month.
