According to a blog post on the official Team Meat website, the two developers behind the indie sensation Super Meat Boy will not be working on a sequel for their next release.

Instead, they will be focusing their efforts on Mew-Genics, a new and experimental game that will be nothing like Super Meat Boy. Here is Edmund, one half of Team Meat, in his own words talking about the new game:

Mew-Genics is by far the strangest project I've ever worked on.. and that's saying something. Tommy and i are very happy with how development has been going on it and decided that Mew-Genics will be the next official Team Meat game. We don't want to spoil too much here, but we can say the game will be randomly generated, strange and involve cats.

We have to say that this news, while unwelcome for fans who want the next SMB game right away, is a good sign for the long-term creativity of Team Meat. Rather than cash in off the momentum of being featured in Indie Game: The Movie, it's refreshing to see these two return to what got them there in the first place - exploration and experimentation.

That's not to say that a SMB sequel is totally out of the picture. According to Team Meat, the game is "still in dev," which likely means that it's just on the back burner. In the meantime, we have a game about cat eugenics to look forward to. And who doesn't love that?
