Originally slated to arrive sometime in June 2013, Disney Interactive has announced Disney Infinity will be delayed a few months to August 18th.

Disney Infinity was supposed to release alongside the Pixar film Monsters University, but now the publisher is thinking a late summer launch would provide a "better opportunity." That opportunity was brought up by retailers concerned that the game and toys would fare much better closer to the start of the holiday season.

“We could deliver in June if we wanted to,” said John Pleasants, co-president of Disney Interactive in an interview with the New York Times. “Will a two-month timing change help us? Sure, of course. It gives us a little more time to add bells and whistles and make sure it really sings and pops.”

While Pleasants did state he believed the delay would impact Disney Interactive's profitability for the year, the publisher will still see the gains in early fiscal 2014. Retailers are purportedly promising major shelf space to Disney Infinity, which could make the battle between this new franchise and Activision's Skylanders quite interesting this fall.

What do you think of the delay? Smart on Disney's part, or will the back-to-school launch hurt potential sales?
