While the ink on Thief's box art is still drying, Eidos Montreal has laid off a substantial amount of its employees.

Kotaku reported that Eidos Montreal has handed out pink slips to members of its development team. This news comes fresh off of a relatively lukewarm reception to Thief, which was released last week across multiple platforms.

Insider sources claim that Thief had multiple troubles throughout its development. Also, Eidos Montreal had to cancel an unannounced game it was previously developing this past October. Eidos Montreal's parent company, Square Enix, has confirmed that it had to let go of 27 Eidos Montreal employees. Square also claims that it is trying to arrange the relocations of many of these employees to other studios in the Montreal area.

Hopefully the process is swift, and many of those affected can find work quickly.
