Toy Fair 2014: Funko’s Pop Line Goes Gaming
Funko has been invading desktops for a few years now with its adorable and vast Funko Pop! collection. This year at Toy Fair, Funko showed off some of its upcoming cute-ified versions of popular characters and licenses like Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect and World of Warcraft.
Though a few of the figures on display were already widely available, Toy Fair presented us with the first physical showings of more than a few different popular video game characters. Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag's Edward can be found in specialty stores now, but Aveline, Ezio, Connor and Altair are yet to come. It's always nice to see leading ladies like Aveline get a little more notice, and along with McFarlane Toys, Funko is one of the few companies recognizing the first female Assassin with her own figure.
Ubisoft isn't the only publisher with an ever-expanding line of Funko Pop! figures however, and the upcoming offerings from Blizzard should make World of Warcraft, Starcraft II and Diablo III fans very happy. In addition to the likes of Jim Raynor, Arthas, Tyrael and Diablo, Funko also has a Deathwing, Thrall, Lady Sylvanas and Murloc planned. None of the last four figures were on display, but you can check out some of the concept art below. That Deathwing might just be the most adorable interpretation of the massive monster we've ever seen.
The Mass Effect line is already doing rather well, and there's a Tali on track for release soon. There's still no female Shepard on the docket, but perhaps once a new game comes back around there'll be a reason to expand into more characters from the BioWare series. Sony's got two figures coming in the form of Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet (how has this not already happened?) and Kratos from God of War. Even miniaturized, Kratos still strikes a fearsome pose.
The biggest new addition though has to be the upcoming Magic: The Gathering lines, one in the Pop! series, and one dubbed the Legacy Collection. All the characters included are based on the Planeswalkers, so you'll get to see the likes of Jace Beleren, Ajani Goldmane, Niss Revane and more. The Pop! figures are appropriately detailed, but it's the Legacy Collection (done in conjunction with Gentle Giant) that will have Magic fans reaching for their wallets. The articulated action figure line features all six Planeswalkers with some accessories. The figures are just prototypes for now, but we can see plenty of Friday night Magic players bringing these toys along to matches for good luck.
