Sony Pictures has hired the relatively unknown British writer Jay Basu to write the silver screen adaptation of Metal Gear Solid.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures has inked a deal with Jay Basu to write the script for a movie based on Metal Gear Solid. This Shadow Moses film is going to be brought to Hollywood by producers Ari and Avi Arad, under the guidance of production president Michael De Luca. Avi Arad is the CEO and founder of Marvel Studios and the CCO of Marvel Entertainment. The project currently has Jordan Vogt-Roberts, known for The Kings of Summer, as its director. Though relatively unknown, Jay Basu's writing experience includes Sony of Songs, Fast Girls, The Dinosaur Project and Monsters: Dark Continent. Be careful — he's no rookie. He's a 10-year vet. Wouldn't David Hayter, who voiced Snake throughout the MGS series and was the screenwriter for X-Men, X2: X-Men United and Watchmen, be the perfect choice?

Unfortunately, Sony Pictures refused to comment on the Metal Gear Solid project, but we hope that this turns out to be true, as most fans have felt Hideo Kojima's timeless classic has the potential to be an amazing action film. The only issue we could see this film having, other than Vogt-Roberts and Basu not having many notable films to their names, is its heavy influences taken from John Carpenter's Escape from New York. Carpenter's movie is a tale about a grizzled war hero, named Snake Plisskin, stealthily breaking into a criminal-controlled prison (a quarantined Manhattan) in order to the rescue the president. Plisskin obviously had huge influences on the creation of both Big Boss and Solid Snake's characters. Nevertheless, we're just praying this turns out to be a good video game-based film. Stay tuned as we'll provide up-to-date coverage on the Metal Gear Solid movie once more information is available. Don't mess this one up, Hollywood.
