Whether brutal, endless or just plain scary, these armies are more than a cut above your regular minion hordes. These are the 10 Best Armies of Monsters in Video Games.
As a game, Pokemon Go appeals to the public’s love of Pokemon, of adventure and conquering the fantastic. There’s no reason the subsequent elements of the game shouldn’t appeal to why we love Pokemon.
At this point, it’s safe to call Pokémon GO a certified global phenomenon. I could quote a lot of numbers, but there’s not really a point to doing so. It’s huge. It’s everywhere. It’s the subject of every other article that comes across your Facebook feed. It’s precisely engineered to strike at the nostalgic heart of those who grew up with the original 150 Pokémon, but given the game’s ubiquity it’s only a matter of time before creatures from later generations make it in.
It’s been just about 20 years since the first 151 Pokémon were unleashed on the world. Nintendo is celebrating such a monumental event all year round with events that are revisiting the last 20 years of Pokémon such as releasing legendary Pokémon from every generation every month until the end of the year. Pokemon is also going all the way back to the beginning with their generations TCG booster set that is a reprint of the very first Pokémon Trading Card Game set. It’s only natural, then, that Pokémon would want to go back to the games that started it all--the original Pokémon games: Red, Blue and Yellow (which came a year later).
Is the world of Pokémon really all about Pokémon? Certainly to an extent it is, but there’s another aspect of each game that’s arguably as important as the pocket monsters themselves. They’re the gates that test your skill at every major turn in a Pokémon game. They’re the focal point of every city and the checkpoints on the way to becoming a true Pokémon master. It’s not just about raising every available critter you like. It’s about building a balanced team that will meet these challenges head-on. Of course, we’re talking about Pokémon gym leaders.
Maybe they’re on this list because they were just too ridiculous to forget. Maybe they’re here because they brought something to the table that the other trainers didn’t. Or maybe they’re here because their ridiculously difficult challenge was the stuff of nightmares. Either way, these gym leaders are the boss battles that have made 20 years of Pokémon a worthwhile series of journeys. These are the 20 Best Pokémon Gym Leaders.
With last week’s announcement of Pokémon Go for iOS and Android mobile devices, once and future trainers all over the internet have been given a new reason to be abuzz with excitement about the prospect of once again catching them all. The two men arrested for making threats of violence at the Pokemon World Championships and showing up to the event with guns have been denied bail by a Boston Municipal Court Judge.
I've identified with a lot of Dinosaur Comics strips, but I don't think any of them have ever spoken to me quite as much as the one where T-Rex talks about how Nintendo is the only corporation that he thinks of as a friend. As I've said before here at CA, I've spent more time with Mario than I have with most members of my own immediate family, and that's not a decision I regret. And if you have similar feelings and also love comics by amazingly talented young creators --- which I assume is why you're here in the first place --- then I've got something that you're probably going to want to check out.
Zinetendo, a new full-color, 46-page zine devoted entirely to Nintendo's greatest hits, is available for pre-order now, and it's awesome. Check out some of my favorite pieces below!
