Final Fantasy 7’s Midgar Recreated in Minecraft
Square Enix may never give us the Final Fantasy VII remake that so many of us are clamoring for, but a dedicated and talented Minecraft builder has painstakingly recreated the game’s most iconic city, Midgar.
Crafter Killerx20 started building the massive city in early 2012 with help from other modders, and released the final version earlier this month. Kotaku reports that the 1290x1290 map features every room and sector from Final Fantasy VII, as well as fully-recreated areas from Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus. The Mako reactors, Shinra HQ and even Aerith’s church are all faithfully recreated and can be accessed by the functional railway system that connects the city’s sectors.
In the announcement of the final map, Killerx20 thanks his collaborators, as well as the the makers of several gameplay mods that helped make the project possible. What’s more, he plans to improve on the already impressive map by adding more variety and detail to Midgar's buildings and implementing a sewer network beneath the slums. It seems that an obsessive-compulsive’s work is never done. Actually, the blocky Minecraft engine reminds us of the original FF7 engine. Cloud and the gang would fit here perfectly.
The attention to detail, precision and sheer amount of work displayed in the Midgar map is staggering, especially considering the creator’s statement that, “more than (sic) 85% of this build WAS indeed hand placed.” It’s easily one of the most impressive and beautiful Minecraft creations in existence and PC players can experience the glory of getting hopelessly lost in the futuristic city by downloading it here.
