'Tomb Raider' Reboot Heads to Warner Bros. With New Writer

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard anything about the Tomb Raider reboot, which was first announced back in 2009. As of the last update, the project was over at MGM and a script was in the works. Now, the Tomb Raider reboot has made yet another move, as Warner Bros. has picked up the project with a brand new writer in tow, and they’re putting the movie on the “fast track.”

Deadline reports that WB will now distribute the film, while Evan Daugherty has been hired to write the screenplay. Daugherty previously wrote scripts for Snow White and the Huntsman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Divergent. As reported before, the Tomb Raider reboot is still planning on featuring a younger Lara Croft embarking on her very first adventure.

The classic video game franchise was previously adapted into two films starring Angelina Jolie in the iconic role of Lara Croft, an archaeologist and adventurer who makes a habit of exploring dangerous, ancient tombs all over the globe. The first Tomb Raider film was released in 2001, followed by a sequel in 2003. Then, back in 2006, it was announced that GK Films was developing a reboot, which was inspired by Rise of the Planet of the Apes—definitely an interesting concept. The rights then moved to MGM, where development seemingly stalled out a few years back.

Let’s see if WB can get this thing up and running again.
