Microsoft announced today that it has sold its IPTV business, Mediaroom, to competitor Ericsson. Why? Because Microsoft has its own cloud TV giant that it wants to build up: the Xbox.

According to Microsoft’s Official Blog, Microsoft is going to be committing, “100 percent of its focus on consumer TV strategy with Xbox.” This doesn’t just include the Xbox console through. Remember, Xbox is available on Windows 8 and will be available on platforms such as Windows phone and tablets.

“It is not a mission that we can achieve alone,” Microsoft said. “We want to partner with the industry to deliver the next wave of innovation in games and consumer entertainment. We will partner with content creators, studios, labels, networks, content aggregators, operators and distributors to make this happen”

Microsoft’s new console is scheduled to be announced in late May this year. Analysts have long theorized that Microsoft would be pushing the new Xbox’s non-gaming capabilities, and this new cloud TV platform only reinforces that outlook.
