We've been dying for more gothic tales of the blood-sucking Legacy of Kain series, but watching its canceled Dead Sun project in action reaves the soul.

VG247 reports that NeoGAF user Mama Robotnik recently posted a bunch of footage and details about the canceled project, Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun. The best (and worst) parts of these finds includes 30 minutes of gameplay footage from this would-be sequel. Dead Sun was developed by Climax Studios with assistance from Crystal Dynamics from 2010 to 2012. Square Enix decided to scrap the project, despite its hopes to make it a PS4 launch title, due to overall low interest in the series and poor sales from its predecessors.

The Legacy of Kain series has spanned five games, with the most notable entry being Soul Reaver, which was directed, produced and written by Amy Hennig of Uncharted fame. The last title of the series was 2003's Defiance, which was released on the PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC. Defiance was hybrid of Soul Reaver 2 and Blood Omen 2's gameplay and told the final story of the series' opposing vampire protagonists, Raziel and Kain. During the development of Legacy of Kain: Defiance, Hennig left Crystal Dynamics for Naughty Dog. A sixth title, The Dark Prophecy, was meant to continue the story after Defiance, but was also canceled during its development in 2004. The development of Nosgoth, a multiplayer spin-off title, was kept below the radar as it recently opened its doors to an ongoing open beta. It is rumored that many of Nosgoth's assets were taken from the scrapped, original version of Dead Sun, whose second build was inevitably canceled as well.

Here's to hoping Nosgoth is successful and Square Enix reignites the Legacy of Kain series one day.
