On Wednesday, Nintendo announced plans to release an remake of Wind Waker for the Wii U to satisfy fans while they wait for a proper next-gen Zelda.

Speaking during the Nintendo Direct presentation, Eiji Aonuma discussed briefly Nintendo's plans for the Zelda franchise on the Wii U. While Aonuma said it was much too early to discuss the first proper next-gen Zelda title, he did announce the Wii U would be getting a Zelda game before the end of 2013.

To tide fans over until The Legend of Zelda Wii U is ready, Nintendo will be releasing an HD remake of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. Some updated images of the locales made famous in the Gamecube title were shown off, though there was little in the way of actual footage. To make things even better, Wind Waker HD will be playable on just the GamePad, and will include some gameplay upgrades.

It's not a new Zelda, but getting some high definition remakes of classic Nintendo titles should more than satisfy that adventuring itch until a new game is announced.
