Skylanders Makes Buku Bucks for Activision
According to Activision's latest sales numbers, the Skylanders franchise has earned more than $1 billion to date.
It's impressive that the action figures and video games Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and Skylanders: Giants were able to generate so much money in just 15 months. Activision is no stranger to billion dollar franchises, but that this latest series has continued to be so successful so quickly now gives the publisher a distinct leg up on all the competition.
In addition to surpassing the billion dollar mark, Activision claimed as of January, some 100 million Skylanders figures had been sold. That's more than popular lines like Beyblades, Star Wars, and Transformers had sold in the same time frame in the U.S. and U.K. With the all-new Skylanders: Swap Force due out later this year, there's no sign the fervor for these figures will be slowing down whatsoever.
“The Skylanders franchise became the first kids’ videogame IP to cross the $1 billion mark in just 15 months4, and I think we are still just starting to realise its potential,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, Inc. “We knew that the simple, but magical idea, of bringing your toys to life in a video game could change both the video game and the toy industries, and more importantly, change the way kids play."
