When Wreck-It Ralph was released in 2012, I was hopeful that it would mark the beginning of a resurgence for one of its cameo characters, Q*Bert. Sadly, the foul-mouthed orange protagonist and his enemies haven’t been seen since the Pixar film, and remain among the most underutilized characters from the golden age of  arcades. While it’s not a major release, Gonzo Games and Sideline Amusements are giving some love to Q*Bert with Q*Bert Rebooted, coming to Steam on July 8.

According to Polygon, Q*Bert Rebooted will include the classic 1982 Q*Bert arcade game as well as a new 3D version with modern graphics and gameplay. Replacing the pyramid of cubes from the original with a stack of hexagons, Q*Bert Rebooted will bring new game modes, power-ups and traps, along with entirely new characters. Three new enemies, Homer, Uppercut and Treasure Chest, will join classic villains Ugg, Slick, Sam, Red Ball, Wrong Way and Coily, in their quest to destroy Q*Bert. Fortunately, the eponymous orange… whatever Q*Bert is will have a slew of new playable characters to help him out, including Q*zard, Q*bertha, Q*bot, Q*zilla, Q*tee, Q*knight and Q*nicorn.

At $4.99, picking up Q*Bert Rebooted seems like a no-brainer, but I was hopeful that we’d see a more robust release, possibly in the vein of Pac-Man Championship Edition. Q*Bert’s is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, as a result of their buyout of Columbia Pictures, who obtained the rights in their takeover of Gottlieb. It seems odd that Sony is licensing the character to relatively unknown studios for a PC and Mobile release instead of making their own game for the PS4 or Vita. Regardless, Q*Bert Reloaded is likely the only Q*Bert-related game we’re likely to see for quite a while, so make sure to check it out on PC, Mac or Linux on July 8, and on mobile devices in the near future.
