‘Pacific Rim,’ ‘Drive’ and ‘Old Boy’ Directors Praise Metal Gear Solid 5’s E3 Trailer
Guillermo del Toro, Nicolas Winding Refn, Park Chan-wook and Norman Reedus are just some of the big Hollywood names praising Hideo Kojima for his E3 2014 trailer of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Polygon reports Hideo Kojima has turned to some famous film directors and actors for feedback on his E3 2014 trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. As you can tell by most of Hideo Kojima's games, he absolutely loves Hollywood films and Japanese anime. Surprisingly, the critiques Kojima has received comes from some of our favorite names in cinema.
"Kojima-San remains a massive inspiration for me and METAL GEAR continues to deliver the edgy, vital, jaw-dropping world and feel that we have come to expect but it pushes the envelope every single time," said Guillermo del Toro, director of 'Pacific Rim,' Pan's Labyrinth' and both 'Hellboy' films. "It is a window into the future of the medium and its breathless narrative and artistic expansion. Amazing!"
Del Toro shocked the world earlier this week by confirming the release date for 'Pacific Rim 2.'
Park Chan-wook, known for the revenge classic, 'Oldboy,' and last year's 'Stoker,' has said that the "Metal Gear Solid games are already films, the films of the future."
Shinya Tsukamoto and Norman Reedus are two surprising names we didn't expect to see responding to Kojima's trailer. The director of 'Nightmare Detective' along with the actor from 'The Walking Dead' both had some supportive, but rather vanilla, comments for Kojima.
Two of the most in-depth responses to the trailer come from Nicolas Winding Refn and Avi Arad. Refn is recently known for his work directing 'Drive' and 'Only God Forgives.'
"Watching the trailers for MGSV makes you wonder if the spirits of Dostoyevsky, Stanley Kubrick, and Caravaggio entered Hideo Kojima’s body because, using the art of gaming as his canvas, he boldly goes where no one has gone before," Refn said. "The trailers for Metal Gear Solid V, prove once again that Hideo Kojima is a master at portraying a wider and more complex view of human nature combined with breathtaking action sequences."
"A daring and bold move from one of the founders of the future of technology. With Metal Gear Solid V, Hideo Kojima has created the perfect marriage of cinematic storytelling and cutting edge gaming technology. For me, it all culminates into one word: Genius."
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is due for a 2015 release for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
