Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, has died at the age of 55 due to a bile duct growth.

The news of Iwata's passing came by way of a statement sent out by Nintendo. The statement reads:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth

An overview of his career record is given, listing different times in which he took a new position. He was appointed as Director in June 2000. In May 2002, he was appointed as both President and Representative Director. In June 2013, he was appointed the position of CEO of Nintendo of America Inc.

He was the fourth Nintendo president and the first president in the company to not have been linked to the Yamauchi family. Before his senior positions in Nintendo, he worked as a programmer for HAL Laboratory, Inc., the company responsible for games like EarthBound, the Kirby series and Super Smash Bros.
