The main aim of most iOS titles is to appeal to as many people as possible. It gets them recognition, and more importantly, sales. Yes, there are passionate developers for whom sales are secondary, but it is a fact of life that you need money to survive. That is why it is rare to see an iOS game that is so niche that it has almost no hope of appealing to anyone but its tiny core audience. Kingturn RPG Plus looks like a game for a very specific type of iOS gamer. Let's find out who that is.

Niche games, while unappealing to the masses, find their way into the hearts of many a gamer. You have people that are die hard Dynasty Warriors fans even after the endless parade of games that are the same. Kingturn RPG Plus is another one of those games that gamers of a certain mindset will absolutely love.

Kingturn RPG Plus is the third in a series of strategy role-playing games. Although it is a series that takes place in the same setting, each game has its own story and can be played in any order. This game is a nice way to jump in if you want to give an old-school strategy-RPG a try.

Like many other games in this genre, Kingturn RPG Plus looks like a top down RPG from the days of the SNES. It is a remnant filled to the brim with pixel graphics and sprites. But, even with the simpler graphics, it looks alright. There is nothing glaringly awful. It has simple graphics so that the strategy and RPG elements can shine through.

As with many of the strategy RPGs of yesteryear, it takes an inordinate amount of selections to get anything done, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Because you have to select a character, tap another spot to move, tap the character again to select a special attack then tap on your target, it gives you something mindless to do while you contemplate your next move. Since the game is a turn-based RPG, it helps keep things moving while you think.

The setting of Kingturn RPG Plus is your standard fantasy backdrop and has an assortment of characters that you can add to your team of heroes. There are over 50 scenarios for you to play as you explore the world of Andaria after the murder of the king. The story isn’t the best in the world, but it is entertaining enough to keep you forging along through each of the levels.

It isn’t all entertaining strategic thought though; Kingturn RPG Plus has a few issues holding it back. The combat can get very tedious and boring after a long stretch. Also, if you enjoy the first eight scenarios, you have to pay to finish the game. While the title is free for those eight, it can feel a bit disingenuous to set up a story then hit you with a paywall.

Overall, Kingturn RPG Plus is a worthy turn-based strategy game, if that is your thing. If you aren’t familiar with the genre, then you'd best look for a more accessible introduction. While not the greatest of games, it is certainly a welcome addition to the App Store kingdom. Fans of strategy RPGs will rejoice at having something familiar and fun in their pocket.
