That's right, Hyrule Warriors will let you actually play as Ganondorf, the wielder of the Triforce of Power and the perpetual big bad of The Legend of Zelda series.

Nintendo has announced that Link's ongoing nemesis will be a playable character in Hyrule Warriors. The Big N recently held a Nintendo Direct event that explained many of Hyrule Warriors' newest features. In particular, there will be a list of challenges that will resemble the overworld map of the original Legend of Zelda title on NES. Each time you finish a challenge, you unlock a new region of the map, which unlocks a new level in Adventure Mode. Specific characters and gear will only be unlockable using Adventure Mode.

In addition to the characters we already know about (Link, Zelda, Impa, Midna, Sheik, Agitha, Darunia, Princess Ruto, Lana and Fi), Nintendo also mentioned that Zant, the villain from Twilight Princess, and Ghirahim, the villain from Skyward Sword, will also be playable. As previously reported, downloadable alternate costumes will be pre-order bonuses from select retailers. Ganon's alternate outfits (including how he looked in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess), will be available for free just by signing up for a Club Nintendo account.

There will be a local co-op mode for Hyrule Warriors, where one person will use the TV to control their character and another will use the Wii U's GamePad. Even though Tecmo Koei's Dynasty Warriors 7 had online co-op when it launched in 2011, Hyrule Warriors will not feature an online co-op mode, because... Nintendo.

Be ready to fight across the Skyloft, Lake Hylia and Twilight Field when Hyrule Warriors launches on Sept. 26 exclusively on Wii U.

For those who missed it, here is last night's Nintendo Direct event that detailed many of these new features in Hyrule Warriors.

Maybe Ganon is such a meanie because he doesn't get as much sleep as Link.
