All is not lost when it comes to Star Wars video games, as EA has signed a multi-year agreement with Disney to keep the brand alive on consoles, computers, and handhelds.

With the Disney purchase of Lucasfilm came the acquisition of LucasArts. Unfortunately, Disney shuttered LucasArts, while keeping open the prospect of licensing out those intellectual properties in the future. The future is apparently now, as Monday, Disney and EA revealed plans to keep the Star Wars video games alive.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau in a statement. “Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

While BioWare is still hard at work on Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO, the news that DICE and Visceral would be bringing their respective talents to the fold is exciting. There are few developers we'd like to see bring a new Battlefront-esque game to life beyond DICE, and Visceral has shown what it can do with action games set in space. Though there was no mention made of the possible resurrection of Star Wars 1313, we'll just have to take solace in the fact that there will be more Star Wars games coming.

What do you think of the news? What kind of games do you want to see DICE and Visceral create in the Star Wars universe?
