There are few things in the world of fiction that I love more than stories about dystopian futures where the corrupt and ruthless power structure can only be brought down by a very specific recreational activity. Car racing, breakdancing, even competitive cooking, these are the things that will pave the way for a brighter future. And in Mirror's Edge Catalyst, as I understand it, that activity is parkour. Renegade parkour!

Now, we finally have a chance to find out why that particular future society is so vulnerable to quickly traversing urban obstacles: Dark Horse has announced Mirror's Edge: Exordium, an upcoming miniseries serving as a prequel to the upcoming video game, written and drawn by the writers and artists who worked on the game.

Exordium, a bit of five-dollar Latin that's just a fancy way of saying "beginning," we find out the origin of Faith, the runner whose incredible ability to see parkourable objects in bright red took players through the original Mirror's Edge. Faith will return for the pre-sequel, which takes place before Mirror's Edge Catalyst (the second game of the series that takes place before the first). Here's the official information:

Published this September in partnership with Electronic Arts and DICE, creators of the Mirror’s Edge franchise, Mirror’s Edge: Exordium will grant fans special insight into the origin of Faith, one of the most unique and celebrated heroines in video games. Written by Christofer Emgård, narrative director at DICE, with art by Mirror’s Edge in-house artists Emgård, Mattias Häggström, Robert Sammelin, Henrik Sahlström, and Erik Persson, Mirror’s Edge: Exordium is the perfect introduction to the game’s lore.

“Set in a world as iconic as it is visually stunning, with one of the most compelling and unique protagonists in popular culture, Mirror’s Edge is tailor made for great comics,” said Dark Horse senior editor Dave Marshall. “It’s an awesome opportunity to be able to kick off our partnership with DICE with this series!”

Join us and witness Faith’s transformation, from a careless young woman to the heroine who opens the eyes of the city.

Mirror's Edge Catalyst doesn't have an official release date announced yet, but is expected to launch by Spring 2016 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
