Intelligent Systems has decided to move on from the Fire Emblem series with a brand new game called Code Name STEAM, and it is nothing like we've seen from them before. That's not a bad thing.

This new trailer, which debuted during today's Nintendo Direct, shows exactly what we're talking about. The game is less Fire Emblem, more X-COM, and slathered with American patriotic paint. The commander is a steampunk version of Abraham Lincoln, for crying out loud, we don't know how much more American it can get.

Abraham Lincoln isn't the only historical name in the bunch, as "The Red Badge of Courage" star Henry Fleming appears as the soldier "class." We also have a healer in the Native American Tiger Lilly, Tom Sawyer who specializes in gadgetry, and Lion (who "hails from the Land of Oz apparently) who sports some pretty effective area-of-effect attacks.

We don't know the first thing about what's really going on in this game, but there's just enough weirdness mixed into the familiar X-COM formula to keep us intrigued. Also it's Intelligent Systems, and they're earned some respect after the excellent Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Code Name STEAM is launching exclusively for Nintendo 3DS in the spring of 2015.
