The platformer game is one that every gamer has played and enjoyed. I don't care if it's a Mario or Sonic game, if you've played a game on a home console, you've played a platformer. And probably enjoyed it. The App Store is filled with platformers, so it took some time finding the 10 best platformer games. We left out endless runner games (we already have a 10 Best list for those) and wanted to focus on the fun, original A to B type games. Will your list agree with ours? Let's find out!

    Shantae: Risky's Revenge

    WayForward

Shantae: Risky's Revenge is a weird combination of anime sexual innuendo crossed with a platformer. It would rank higher on the list if you didn't have to tap through a thousand worthless dialogue scenes with no option to skip them. Still, you get to play as a sultry half-genie who uses her magic powers (and belly dancing techniques) to thwart the bad guys. It's fun, it's goofy and you'll feel creepy playing it in public.

    Cordy

    SilverTree Media, LLC

Cordy looks great which is one reason why it made our 10 best platformer games list. It's controls need some serious tightening up, but it's a unique platformer that gives the player a lot to do. Go for 100% on each level or just try and get through it, it's your choice. The graphics are great and so is the sound. Just be patient with a character who tries to act like Sonic but clearly isn't.

    Pix'n Love Rush DX

    Bulkypix

Pix'n Love Rush was a big hit when it was first released. Old school fans loved how the gameplay was constantly changing, keeping you on your toes. One second you're going from left-to-right, the next you're jumping up or down platforms while the music and colors change before you. It's trippy, but it's a good time.

    Random Heroes

    Derek Doucett

Staying with the old-school theme of platformers is Random Heroes. A 10 best platformer if there ever was one. The goal of the game is simple -- save the world from invading aliens. Collect coins to purchase more powerful weapons and have a blast trying to get through some tricky jumping sequences. Fans of League of Evil will totally dig it.

    Mirror's Edge

    Electronic Arts

Smack some bad guys right in the face with this iOS version of the popular console game. It plays like an endless runner (it's not) but you can do so much more than the normal jump and slide. It's a shame it isn't a bit longer, but what you do get is a lot of fun. I don't understand why the iPad version is $10, so opt for the iPhone version and save yourself $9. It's the same game and you'll have extra dough to download other games on this list!

    Nyxquest

    Chillingo

There's something about Greek themed games that make me love them. I don't care if it's the worst game ever made, you stick it in ancient Greece and I'll play it. Play as Nyx, who is in search of her lost friend Icarus. It's a simple platformer but the graphics are gorgeous and there's more to love the further you go in the game. This one is a definite must-buy.

    One Tap Hero

    Chillingo

This brand new entry from Chillingo caught me by surprise. Not only is it disgustingly cute, but it's a lot of fun! Everything you do in the game is done with one tap (hence the name). Over 80 stages in four different worlds will keep you occupied for a long, long time. Can you get three stars in every level?

    Gunman Clive

    Bertil Horberg

Gunman Clive is one of the purest platformers in the App Store, and also one of the most unique. Like I mentioned in my review, it's a fantastic game with excellent controls and awesome sketch graphics. You'll face some crazy enemies, but you'll have a blast doing it.

    Castle of Magic

    Gameloft S.A.

Castle of Magic might be an older iOS game but it's also one of the best platformers ever made. Great controls and excellent graphics remind me of the games I used to play on the Turbografx-16 or the Sega Genesis. There are surprises around every turn, secrets to uncover and more magic than you can shake a wand at. If you enjoyed the 16-bit series of Mickey Illusion platform games, you'll love Castle of Magic.

    Sonic CD

    Sega America

Since Nintendo hates money and refuses to port any of their Mario games over, then it looks like Sega is our 10 best platformer games winner. Sonic CD is a spot-on emulation of this Sega CD classic. The controls are super-tight, the soundtrack is incredible, the graphics look great and it's one of the best Sonic adventures ever made. If you're a fan of this speedy hedgehog (who isn't?) then you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. Maybe it's a good thing Mario isn't competing! He may not stand a chance against this awesome game.
