After passing one million units sold on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 consoles, Angry Birds Trilogy is exploring new territory with its release on the Nintendo Wii U and Wii systems later this year.

The trilogy, which includes Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and Angry Birds Rio, was a stellar success as a mobile game and further proved its staying power on home consoles.

"It was certainly satisfying to see Angry Birds gameplay adapt so well to other platforms in 2012," said Rovio EVP of Games Petri Jarvilehto in a press release. "The features specific to the Wii U are very intriguing to us, so we're excited to release this version to fans."

It will be fascinating to see if Angry Birds Trilogy makes effective use of the Wii U GamePad, especially since it's a controller that's perfectly suited for app enthusiasts. The game is also available on the Nintendo 3DS, but the true marriage between Nintendo and our flighty friends won't be realized until Angry Birds gets the full Wii U treatment.
