Amiibo Figures to Unlock Virtual Console Game Demos

Nintendo's little figurines will grant access to timed trials of a few NES and SNES classics for the Wii U.

Polygon reports that Nintendo's line of amiibo figurines will be able to do more. Now, instead of just unlocking small bits of content within the titles that you can play with the amiibo, the figures will also start to unlock certain "highlighted scenes" of select NES and SNES classic games. It's not completely clear which games will be selected as of yet, but we do know that the purpose of these selected scenes being revealed is basically to get more people to buy amiibos and promote Virtual Console sales. We have a feeling these will be similar to the timed demos featured in Super Smash Bros on the Wii U.

"With this app, once you tap your amiibo on the NFC area of the GamePad, you will be able to play highlighted scenes of one certain title for NES or Super NES," Nintendo President and CEO Satoru Iwata explained. "You cannot play the entire game due to a time limit, but another tap of the amiibo will enable you to try another highlighted scene in the game. We hope that when you tap your amiibo, the quickly changing game scenes will pleasantly surprise you and make you feel as though you have just exchanged a game cartridge."

Based on the explanation, you may not even need many amiibo figures in order to play your favorite scenes from the selected NES or SNES games, but just one, which you can tap on your GamePad multiple times.

With a new batch of amiibo figures coming out for Mario Party 10, we will just have to wait and see what these little guys (and gals... and animals) have in store for us.
