Even though he comes in a little under the radar, Firion deserves a spot on this list because he was the first "main character" in the FF games. Branching out from the basic templates set down in the first Final Fantasy, the second game (which was not released in the states until years after it had come out in Japan), was much more ambitious with its storyline. Final Fantasy II may look a lot like the first game, but it goes way beyond that in terms of story, bringing in heroes with personalities and history. One of the main goals for creator Hironobu Sakaguchi was to put more effort into character development. Firion was the first true party leader in FF games and from what creator Sakaguchi accomplished with him, much would follow.
