Almost three years after debuting on the Wii U, Ubisoft's first-person undead shooter, ZombiU, heads to current-gen consoles as Zombi.

Ubisoft has announced that 2012's ZombiU is heading to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC next month. As you'd expect, Zombi is all about trying to survive the zombie apocalypse. Just like in The Walking Dead, you have to prioritize stealth, distractions and avoidance over direct confrontation, as ammo is hard to find and gunshots attract zombies from afar. Even better, dying in Zombi means a new character takes his/her place and they must kill your newly reanimated corpse to gather your old inventory so you can continue your game. Unfortunately, the game heavily relied on the Wii U GamePad screen, especially for inventory and minimap usage.

“We knew from the beginning that maintaining the tension and feel of the original was one of the main challenges, as the way ZombiU was presented on Wii U cannot be reproduced,” says Hélène Henry, Zombi’s producer. “We maintain a minimal HUD as much as possible. It disappears when not required, giving the game a very lonely feeling. If you have surround sound, the awesome sound mix from the original still stands and greatly helps immersion. As much as possible, we’ve tried to keep those key elements.”

Instead of using the GamePad to manage your inventory, Ubisoft has a new item system in play.

“We kept the central idea that you’re always vulnerable,” Henry added. “Rummaging in the backpack still doesn’t pause the game. We’ve added a dedicated button to access the backpack, which lets players see their full inventory and assign shortcut keys.”

Zombi will launch on Aug. 18 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The new title of this game makes me wonder if there were any copyright issues with Lucio Fulci's two Italian horror movies of the same name.
