Super Smash Bros. could revitalize Nintendo's Wii U sales with its record-breaking pre-sales.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime discussed the promise Smash Bros. presented for the future of Wii U sales. Based on the record number of pre-orders, Fils-Aime is hopeful that it will help the brand's Wii U sales. Currently, the Wii U (2 million sold in 2014) isn't standing up to the PlayStation 4 (8.1M in 2014) or Xbox One (3.3M in 2014). With the holiday season quickly approaching, this lag in sales is something that's weighing on Nintendo's mind.

“Consumers buy the hardware so they can play the software," Fils-Aime said. This concept is not new to us "consumers." Having to buy a new Game Boy every other time a new Pokemon game came out is something that we have dealt with since the beginning of the industry. Because of this well-known circle, and the amount of Super Smash Bros. sales, Fils-Aime is hopeful that the increase in sales of the Wii U will continue into the season.

Luckily, Nintendo has some timeless characters, such as Zelda and Mario, with which other companies simply can't compete. Fils-Aime is counting on its best sellers to continue to double its Wii U sales as it has done in past years. "Our expectation is that the sell-through for Smash is going to be very strong, certainly on par with what we saw with Mario Kart 8," Fils-Aime said. "We think the impact on hardware will be similarly dramatic."

With Super Smash Bros. coming out in stores on Nov. 21 and the holiday season fast approaching, we will just have to wait and see if Fils-Aime's predictions hold strong.
