Housemarque just dropped a new expansion for its PlayStation 4 shmup Resogun, and we're looking forward to diving back in.

Since Housemarque's voxel-based side-scrolling shoot 'em up video game is based pretty heavily on games like Defender, it only makes sense that its second expansion would be aptly named, Resogun: Defenders. Announced on Sony's PlayStation Blog, the Defenders expansion seems like it will be good both for people who do decide to buy it (and with a price of $4.99, fans will assuredly get their money's worth) and for people who don't. While the expansion itself will obviously come with a bunch of cool new stuff for the game, it is also mentioned in the post that in order for the game to be ready when the expansion comes out, the standard version of Resogun will be getting an update, too. What does this mean? It means a bunch of free new updates for all the people who already own the game, whether they're planning on buying the expansion or not. However, before we get into the free stuff, let's explain what Resogun: Defenders has to offer.

Resogun: Defenders will be bringing with it two new game modes -- Protector and Commando. You will have to fight to keep the battle under control as your troops are pushed back to an unknown planet  in both of these two modes for Defenders. The first, Protector Mode, will bring you to the stars in power-up filled sky battle where you will have to deliver as many of the last humans to safety as you can. However, this game mode will have you dodging every twist and turn of the environmental hazards it throws at you.

Commando will be a completely different take on things, putting you behind the eyes of the Last Human left. It's all your nightmares come true -- you will be stranded on an unknown, distant planet with only a mini-gun and your wits "in the ultimate arcade revenge mode." Make sure you shoot up all the enemies you can so your home doesn't become invaded! You can also do so with your friend or against others in Battle Mode.

Then there is the update that starts today called Resogun Challengers, where you will earn Challenge Points based on the completion of new... wait for it... challenges. These rewards will give you a reason to revisit all the levels of the game you have already completed.

Resogun: Defenders will be available Feb. 17, but you can enjoy Resogun Challengers today.
