Sony Online Entertainment's FPS-MMO hybrid, Planetside 2, will be opening the doors to its highly anticipated beta test in just a few weeks.

Sony Entertainment Online President John Smedley recently announced on his Twitter that beta testing will be starting in mid-January for his company's upcoming free-to-play, MMO-FPS, Planetside 2. For those who haven't heard of it, Planetside 2 is a free-to-play, massively multiplayer online first-person shooter that originally launched on PC back in late 2012. The PS4 edition will obviously be optimized using the PC version, which was originally a remake of the original Planetside from 2003. Planetside 2 features three warring factions trying to gain control of the planet Auraxis.

"It was approved first pass and goes up either the week of the 13th or 20th," Smedley Tweeted. "We will know when we are back on the 5th."

While Planetside 2 for PlayStation 4 was originally expected for a Dec. 31 release date, we're glad that starting the open beta in mid-January isn't that much of a delay.
