October a Slam Dunk Month for NBA 2K15 and Super Smash Bros

A lackluster number of quality releases for October means it was easy picking for NBA 2K15 and Super Smash Bros. to take the sales crown.

According to the latest NPD results (as reported by Joystiq), NBA 2K15 was the leader for October, which shouldn't be surprising given it came out for five different platforms. However, Super Smash Bros. was an unexpected runner-up. Super Smash Bros. is only currently available for the 3DS which means that Mario and friends must have been working overtime to make it into the top two for this past month. Nintendo even revealed that it has sold over 485,000 copies of this game in North America. The Wii U sales aren't doing too bad either with a 47 percent increase in the first 10 months of 2014.

A few of last month's top ten were either moved down or completely kicked off the list due to many new releases in October such as the two mentioned above as well as The Evil Within, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Skylanders: Trap Team. However, commenters seem to be happy with the changes to the top ten even with Destiny falling to fifth place.

The NPD Group's Liam Callahan admitted to sales throughout hardware, software, and accessories being "essentially flat" for October 2014 as compared to October 2013. However, the analyst did admit that the sales drop may have been because last Oct. people were waiting in patient anticipation of the new consoles that came out--namely the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
