With most of Earthrealm's heroes gone, NetherRealm Studios introduces the new team of Cassie Cage, Takashi Takeda, Kung Jin and Jacqueline Briggs in this new story trailer for Mortal Kombat X.

This new trailer for Mortal Kombat X answers a lot of questions we have about its 25-year time jump from MK9. Instead of Jax, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Kung Lao and Kenshi standing along Liu Kang to fight for Earthrealm, we have a new generation of heroes. Jax Brigg's daughter, Jacqueline; Kung Lao's descendant, Kung Jin; Kenshi's son, Takashi Takeda; and Sonya and Johnny's daughter, Cassie Cage, have all banded together with the thunder god Raiden to stop a new Outworld invasion. And things are looking quite different this time.

A lot of characters died during MK9's story campaign, and we see a lot of them make a miraculous return in this trailer (note: we hate Sub-Zero's new beard, you're not Joel). It looks like a civil war is going on in Outworld between Shao Kahn's successor, Kotal Kahn and Mileena. Caught in the middle is what appears to be the same time-travelling medallion Raiden used to set things straight in MK9. Raiden used it to seal MK4 antagonist Shinnok in it, and Mileena can be seen using it on Kotal Kahn.

We can see that Sindel, Baraka, Shinnok, Mileena, Rain, Erron Black, a smoke-colored female ninja, Takashi, Kung Jin and Jacqueline appear to be joining the main roster. With 11 unrevealed spots left on MKX's character selection screen, we have a feeling that last person could in fact be the Predator or Spawn. Then again, some of these characters could just be used exclusively for the game's cutscenes.

Here's NetherRealm Studios' synopsis of this new story:

"Taking place 25 years after the events of Mortal Kombat [9], the new generation of characters will discover that Outworld is not the only threat they face. Fans will get a first look at the newest fighters to join Cassie Cage, including Jacqueline Briggs, daughter of Jax, Takashi Takeda, son of Kenshi, and Kung Jin, descendant of Kung Lao."

Mortal Kombat X will debut on April 14 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360.
