Activision has taken great pride in how each Call of Duty sequel has somehow managed to outperform the previous entry in both pre-orders and overall sales. That trend might come to a screeching halt as the publisher revealed Call of Duty: Ghosts isn't performing as well as Black Ops 2 in the pre-order department.

"As one might expect in this console transition year, pre-orders for Call of Duty: Ghosts are well below the record-setting pace set by Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 last year," said publishing president Eric Hirshberg on an investor's call. CVG reported no actual numbers were given on the call, but Hirshberg stated the company's research showed "hesitation amongst past CoD pre-orderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they'll be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition."

The good news is, Ghosts is still tracking better than the original Black Ops, which was the last time Activision introduced a new subset into the franchise. To make sure nobody forgets about Ghosts this holiday, Hirshberg added the game would receive "the most aggressive marketing, retail, and digital programs in the history of the franchise." If you recall any CoD game previously, it's hard to image a marketing strategy that pushes even harder.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is still likely to be one of the best-selling games of 2013, even if it doesn't manage to eclipse its predecessor. Which console do you plan to use to play Ghosts?
