When Housemarque took the stage at Sony's Gamescom 2014 press conference, we weren't quite sure what to expect. Housemarque has delivered on two unique types of gameplay: space shooters like Resogun and Super Stardust HD and top-down shootfests like Dead Nation. As the trailer for its new game Alienation began, we quickly found out with the exploding head of some poor space marine.

Alienation is a furious shoot-em-up with swarms of enemies and bullets flying in every direction. The game will sport a twin-stick control scheme a la their other games, but this time we'll be mowing down wave after wave of mutants infected with what the PlayStation Blog describes as "an outbreak of alien spores that has the potential to infect all who consume the material."

The blog also teases single-player and up to four-player co-op for alien-crushing fun with friends, as well as a visual style that is "expected to bring forth a level of destruction and visual resonance that may render the world as we know it obsolete." Pretty confident words from the small team at Housemarque, but their past games allow them to have a little swagger leading up to Alienation's release.

Alienation has no announced release window yet, but we'll be keeping an eye on this one.
