Most of them just look horrible and dull, but that’s a genre mainstay anyway. But what I really wanted to say is that Dead Space is one of the worst horror games I can imagine. It has zero originality in terms of gameplay or story-ideas and completely wastes its nice setting. I would have expected it in the category of horror games that are not scary. It’s simply a shallow action blockbuster with a few cheap “shock” effects. “awesome graphics and fun scare points” Yes, that describes it well, I guess.
Good games for me would be Silent Hill, Stalker, System Shock 2 and Amnesia (barely). I don’t know much more, and I don’t find them really “scary” (a lot, anymore), but recommendable games. I would include anything in their vein and on their level.

Resident evil 4 and dead space are the top two? Who thought that up? RE4 is where the game STOPS being scary and gets more actiony, and DS is also more action based. Silent Hill is much creepier than those two.

One of the spookiest games for atmosphere has to be Fatal Frame. The premise is a bit silly, especially for those who are used to playing FPS, but the music, environment, and general mood make this game series one of the spookiest to play. I jumped more playing Fatal Frame then I did for any of the Silent Hill games.

You forgot Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube! It was by far one of the scariest games ever. You’d be walking around the mansion trying to figure the story out and then out of nowhere, your arm would be cut off, then a leg, then your torso cut in half. It was awesome for the few that bought the game, let alone the Gamecube itself.
