Valve May Have Soft Launched Source Engine 2, You Guys
Speculation is running rampant that Valve may have launched their newest game-making engine right under our noses, those sneaky bastards.
VG247 is reporting that new Steam Workshop tools were recently launched for Dota 2, and according to modder and Redditor RoyAwesome, these new tools migrate the game to a brand new engine. RoyAwesome writes, “Everything in this package is a new game. It’s all the Dota assets and code ported over to Source 2. That’s why Hammer is different. That’s why the console is different. Guys. Valve just soft launched the entire Source 2 engine.”
He then dives into his evidence, citing how each of the filenames referring to Source are marked with a “2,” and for his strongest piece of evidence, the following:
“That script also allows for different dlls to load and render different assets (vmaps are rendered by worldrenderer.dll, etc). This is quite a bit different from Source 1, as they had a large number of things in the engine libraries. This bit alone would indicate a significant amount of engine work has been done to split these bits out of the engine and into their own libraries.”
It sounds like a lot of gobbledygook to the non-modders in the room, but it’s got one modder pretty damn excited, so perhaps this is something we should be keeping an eye on. Oh, and there’s also the most recent edit to the post, sent by a modder friend of Roy’s called Voided:

LEFT 4 DEAD 3 CONFIRMED! Which, by proxy, means HALF-LIFE 3 CONFIRMED!
