Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS is coming, and Nintendo is sure to throw a ton of advertising behind the popular cross-over fighting game. One animator has jumped ahead a bit and started the marketing campaign with an unofficial commercial for the game, featuring its most recognizable character, Mario.

Animator Dean Wright has created a Super Smash Bros. ad that brings the world’s most famous plumber into the real world. While shopping at the plumbing section of the hardware store, Mario’s watch lets him know he’s late for something. Rushing off to his appointment, the beautifully rendered cg Mario bolts through the streets of Tokyo, sliding under a train crossing bar before taking a quick nap on the train, all set to the familiar Smash Bros. main theme. Mario then resumes his run, maneuvering through traffic before finally heading into the Super Smash Bros. Stadium.

For a fan-made commercial, it’s very impressive. Mario’s CG form looks a little out of place in real world settings, but it’s not enough to detract from the overall presentation. I would love to see Nintendo adopt this as part of their ad campaign; I could easily see an extended version of this type of trailer featuring a bunch of Nintendo characters rushing through real world environments to get to the tournament. Kirby might have to rush out of a cupcake store, and Link might be getting some keys copied when he gets the alert. After the advertising blitz that Nintendo gave Mario Kart 8, I’m expecting some sort of huge ad campaign, and Dean Wright’s video would be a great place to start.

Mario's mustache is nice, but did it make the cut for the Best Mustaches in Video Games?
