Creative Assembly has announced their newest project, Total War: ARENA, at GDC.

The game will be spin-off for the Total War series and will play as a mix of a real-time strategy and a multiplayer online battle arena. Creative Assembly will be using a free-to-play model for this game, meaning that a tasty cash shop will likely surface once the game is released.

The gameplay will consist of team-based battles in which players will "pitch history's greatest commanders and their armies against each other," which makes us hope that Genghis Khan won't be ridiculously overpowered, given his many conquests.

Not a lot of details have been released about the project, but Creative Assembly has sent out the call for interested gamers to sign up for the closed betas by going to the game's official site.

Think you have what it takes to take on history's biggest and baddest commanders? Let us know if you're going to sign up for the beta in the comments section below!
