Gaming's original alien hip hop duo has returned, as Humanature Studios has launched a Kickstarter campaign to bring back ToeJam and Earl for their newest adventure, Back in the Groove.

Greg Johnson, one of the original creators of the ToeJam and Earl series, is bringing his boys back with a brand new game. Humanature Studios has gone to Kickstarter for help with reviving ToeJam and Earl. These guys brought a whole lot of funk to the Sega Genesis when their self-titled game debuted in 1991. The jammin' buddies returned in two sequels: ToeJam and Earl in Panic on Funkotron for the Sega Genesis, and ToeJam and Earl III: Mission to Earth for the original Xbox. While the first game was praised for its unique style and Roguelike mechanics, its platforming-oriented sequels never really reached the critical acclaim or success of the original.

While Back in the Groove focuses on the top-down style of gameplay of the first title (with more of a board game aesthetic), there are elements from Panic on Funkatron that are being utilized as well, such as the Jam Out, hidden presents, coin meters and (hopefully) the Hyperfunk Zone. Johnson admits that they're abandoning the clunky, over-the-shoulder POV from the third title and are sticking to the original's top-down perspective with more of a unique 3D look. Everything looks like an awesome '90s cartoon. Nevertheless, ToeJam and Earl's randomly generated levels, Earthlings and Roguelike gameplay will be intact.

As of today, ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove has reached $120,000 of its $400,000 Kickstarter goal (roughly 30 percent), with 28 days left in its crowdfunding campaign. Humanature Studios intends to release Back in the Groove first for a PC release, and will bring it to consoles depending on the success of its Kickstarter run. Here's to hoping the campaign is success and we once again get to play as those two groovy aliens one more time.
