After almost two years of development, the developers at The Astronauts bring us the first trailer for their first-person horror game, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.

For the first minute of the trailer, we’re treated to some incredible looking shots of the game’s world, including densely forested mountains, winding country roads, a dilapidated bridge and an overgrown graveyard. Every inch of the terrain is brilliantly textured and bathed in soft light, giving the world a soothing, gentle glow, and the realistic trees, brush and water make Red Creek Valley a place of which gamers will want to explore every inch.

Then that guy’s head gets smashed in with a wrench, and it’s all like, “OH SNAP!!!”

The final moments show a badly beaten man futilely crawling away from an attacker. We then finally see the attacker, an older man with a wrench, as he mercilessly bludgeons his victim to death, striking him repeatedly in the head. The jarring juxtaposition of relaxing, beautiful imagery with a scene of intense violence is extremely effective, especially since, unlike in many other teasers, they don’t cut away once the blood starts spilling.

For an indie game, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter looks absolutely gorgeous. We’re hoping to get our hands on the game at E3 next week to see if the gameplay can match the visuals.
