Taking a cue from the dad who swapped Mario and Pauline in Donkey Kong for his daughter, one gamer has made it so that she can play as the eponymous princess in The Legend of Zelda.

A hobbyist animator named Kenna W was inspired by the Donkey Kong swap and wanted to know if she could do the same thing for The Legend of Zelda, since she was a huge fan of the series and played it when she was younger. She had been disappointed in her youth because she was under the impression that, given the game's name, it would star Zelda and follow her adventures.

So she asked her video game programmer boyfriend how she could go about attaining this goal and the pair started working on finding the tools needed to swap out the sprites in the game.

After a lot of hard work, they were successful in modifying a Legend of Zelda ROM so that the princess was the star and had to save Link. You can read about Kenna's progress on her blog, as well as download the patch that will make it so that you can play as Zelda.
