The rolling juggernaut that is Temple Run 2 continued its mad dash for the records books today, becoming the fastest mobile game to reach 50 million downloads.

It only took two weeks for Imangi Studios to hit the mark, more than cutting in half the previous record held by Rovio's Angry Birds Space. Rovio set the previous record back in April 2012, when Angry Birds Space reached the 50 million downloads mark in 35 days.

Keith Shepherd, a co-founder of Imangi Studios, had this to say in a statement:

Temple Run has evolved into something so much bigger than us. The game has performed beyond our wildest dreams, and we are thrilled that gamers and fans have embraced 'Temple Run 2' in such a short period of time.

We can only speculate how much of a cash cow this game must be for Imangi. But if these numbers are any indication, it's got to be huge. The runaway success of this game also ensures that the freemium model is likely not going anywhere for a long time, as more and more developers will try to recreate the Temple Run formula.

Temple Run 2 launched on January 17th and has been among the top free apps ever since. In addition to the Apple App Store, the game is now available on Google Play and Amazon.com, which means that Temple Run 2 is positioned to remain among the top downloaded apps for a long stretch of time.
