What if a game actually forced you to take advantage of your surroundings to survive? Gears of War wasn’t the first game to ask this question, but it was undoubtedly the most iconic and it redefined the cover shooter on this day in 2006.

Gears of War 4 is a worthwhile successor that brings back all of the brutal combat, addictive multiplayer and waist-high walls you remember in a terrific return to form.

After getting a gritty makeover, the Lancer-revving COGs are back in full force in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition. This debut project of The Coalition (formerly Black Tusk Studios) brings Marcus Fenix and his muscle-bound brothers in arms over to the Xbox One after three excellent entries on the Xbox 360 (and Judgment). The Coalition have completely rebuilt the original 2006 Gears of War title from the ground-up in order to hold fans over until the late 2016 (or beyond) release of Gears of War 4.

It's been nine years since the original 'Mad World' trailer heralded Gears of War's Xbox debut. Now, The Coalition revamped it for the game's Ultimate Edition.

Anyone returning to Delta Squad in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition will be able to play the series' entire Xbox 360 anthology.
