Nintendo has come forth to let us know that both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. will be including online multiplayer matches and to what degree.

Players will be able to fight it out against other Smash enthusiasts from around the world as long as they're on the same platform and have access to a broadband Internet connection. Unfortunately, those hoping for cross-platform matches are not going to be able to find it here. Since the 3DS and Wii U versions of Super Smash Bros. each utilize different stages, cross-platform matches will not be happening.

Whenever you're fighting random players online, you will be able to play "For Fun" or "For Glory," which is basically ranked matches vs unranked matches. "For Glory" only lets you use the variations of the Final Destination stage, which has no platforms, items or environmental hazards. The Final Destination stage keeps matches clean and professional, with only player vs. player skills being directly utilized. "For Fun" matches will tally up your wins, while "For Glory" will breakdown your wins, losses, draws, etc. "For Fun" online mode will include randomized levels and grant you full access to the inventory and power-ups we have come to know and love from the Smash Bros. franchise. Whenever you're setting up online matches with your friends, you can fully customize your matches however you would like as if you were setting up matches at home.

Super Smash Bros. will be out this summer for the Nintendo 3DS, but won't be available on the Wii U until later this year.
