It has been roughly two months since Nintendo's newest IP, the ink-shooting Splatoon, has debuted. To celebrate, Nintendo has some free downloadable content in the works.

Nintendo has announced that it will be launching a free software update for Splatoon on the Wii U starting next week. This update adds a variety of new features, including a higher level cap, 40 different pieces of new gear, a variety of additional weapon types and two awesome new matchmaking modes. These two modes include Squad Battle and Private Battle. Private Battle is exactly what it sounds like: friends can have customizable matches with one another online. Just remember that you can do 1v1, 4v4, 1v2, 2v3, or even 1v4 if you're really good. The other gameplay mode is Squad Battle, which lets squid kids join in Ranked Battles with their friends in preset groups. In terms of the higher scores, players will now be able to get rank S and S+ grades for their gameplay, which are both higher than an A+. Likewise, players can now reach level 50, which is much higher than the previous level cap of 20.

Here's what Nintendo representatives had to say about your upgraded arsenal:

While Inklings around the world are enjoying and mastering the current arsenal of weapons in Splatoon, two new weapon types will be available with the update, adding a new layer of strategy to the game. The bucket-like Slosher weapons hurl ink straight ahead at an impressive range. By adjusting the angle, these new weapons can be used to splat opponents who are up high or even on the other side of a wall. With the Gatling-style Splatling, players can charge blasts of all-powerful ink. A maximum charge unleashes the full potential of this particular weapon type. In addition to the new weapons, more than 40 pieces of gear, including everything from a leather jacket to a sushi-chef costume, are coming to the various in-game shops in Splatoon.

This major update for Splatoon will launch on Aug. 5 for free. The House of Mario promises that more free content will be developed throughout the summer and fall for this ink-person shooter, including new weapons, maps and the Rainmaker Ranked Battle Mode.
