Sony has just unveiled a trailer which shows off a brand new mode in God of War: Ascension. The mode is called Trial of the Gods, and is the franchise’s first venture into the world of two player co-op play.

Trial of the Gods is essentially a timed, wave-based, survival mode. Players will be put into a small arena (many of which we have seen before in other God of War: Ascension trailers), and will be asked to kill five waves of enemies before the clock runs down. Every kill nets you extra time and you get bonus time after each wave based on your performance. Slaughter your way through the round and you will have plenty of time in the next. Barely make it through by the skin of your teeth and you will be doing the same against even more powerful enemies soon.

Trial of the Gods uses the same user created multiplayer characters as the competitive multiplayer modes do. Experience gained in Trial of the Gods carries over to the game’s other multiplayer modes as well. Trial of the Gods is designed for two players to take on together, but the mode can be played in single-player mode as well to grind out some XP.

Three maps have currently been announced for Trial of the Gods: Desert of Lost Souls, Forum of Hercules, and Rotunda of Olympus. The Rotunda of Olympus has already been shown as the starting area in the game’s competitive multiplayer beta. More Trial of the Gods maps will be added to the lineup after the game’s release.

God of War: Ascension is set to be released on March 12th in US territories and March 15th in European territories. So hold tight. You’ll be able to get your vengeful murder on in short order and now you can bring a friend along for the ride!
