Sega has announced it's trying to get more mileage out of its revamped hedgehog in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.

The House of Shenmue is bringing the Blue Blur back one more time in Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice for Nintendo 3DS. Unlike the abysmal Rise of Lyric and Shattered Crystal games, this Sonic Boom title will be based on Cartoon Network's popular animated series. As you would expect, Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy and Sticks will all be playable in this new game.Fire & Ice will also introduce some kind of new feature called Bot Racing. Even though people play these games to speed through stages as Sonic, let's give them robots as well.

“We really want this game to surprise and delight Sonic fans both new and old, and have created a unique, fun game that delivers,” said John Cheng, President and COO, SEGA of America. “By introducing unique elemental gameplay features like ice and fire, along with new speed and exploration gameplay, there is a lot to enjoy with Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice.”

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice (which perfectly summarizes the past 15 years of the franchise) is being developed by Sanzaru Games, who did the underwhelming Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal for the 3DS last year. It could be worse, at least they're not bringing back Big Red Button (shudder). We have to admit, it's hard to stay enthusiastic about a new Sonic game based on all of the hedgehog's letdowns of the past 15 years. Here's to hoping that Fire & Ice does what the previous Sonic Boom games couldn't.

Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will launch for Nintendo 3DS this coming holiday season.
