Nintendo has announced that it will be launching its first official smartphone app, a digital companion to Mario Kart 8

At Nintendo's recent Financial Results Briefing, company president Satoru Iwata announced that Nintendo will be launching its first official smartphone application in order to take advantage of what the platform has to offer. This debut app, "Mario Kart TV," which will focus on providing supplementary game coverage and information in regards to Mario Kart 8 players.

Mario Kart 8 will enable players to upload racing reels and share them on the Internet, while Mario Kart TV (Iwata mentions the name is not finalized) will allow users to easily find and watch this footage on their smart devices and computers. Iwata's provided picture of the app (seen above) shows how the web service will allow people to easily find official player rankings, friends' racing progress, gameplay videos shared by friends, tournament gameplay and official footage straight from Nintendo.

Mario Kart TV is expected to launch around the same time as Mario Kart 8's May 30 release date.
