Sacred Citadel, the action-brawler that hearkens back to the arcade side-scrollers of yore, packs a lot of role-playing game elements that should help players customize the hell out of their heroes.

If there's anything that can make a side-scrolling beat 'em up that much better, it's RPG-style customization. Sacred Citadel is set to have characters that can grow in level and learn new skills, which will help in decimating the forces of evil that lurk off-screen.

Each character is based on a class with unique abilities. You can choose from the Khukuri Shaman, the Ancarian Ranger, the Safiri Warrior, and a secret character who remains -- a secret. These classes can learn cool skills that only get stronger with more experience.

Equipment is also an important part of the game, since characters can pick up weapons and armor that boost their stats. And if there's anything that will get a hardcore RPG player to keep coming back to a game, it's epic loot. Players will even be able to customize weapon combinations, letting them choose their own style of play.

Adventurers will find that they can stop by towns in the game and unload their treasures on merchants. This will get them the scratch needed to buy potions and other items necessary for a successful sojourn into the wilds of Ancaria.

Peep the screenshots below and let us know if you're game for this nostalgia-driven brawler! No set release date is available, but the game will be out on the PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Arcade later this year!
