Robin Williams, Actor and Comedian, Dead at 63

Nintendo

Robin Williams, the man who brought us iconic performances as the Genie in ‘Aladdin’ and Peter Banning in ‘Hook’, has died at the age of 63. He was found in his California home today according to the Marin Count Sheriff’s department.

The Sheriff’s department’s report indicates Williams died of asphyxiation in an apparent suicide. While the investigation is still ongoing, Williams’ publicist released a statement to THRstating, “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”

Susan Schneider, Williams’ wife, also released a statement.

This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.

In addition to the previously mentioned roles, Williams won an Academy Award in 1998 for Best Supporting Actor for his role in ‘Good Will Hunting’, as well as more memorable roles in films like ‘Dead Poets Society’, ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ and ‘Jumanji’.

However, it was the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time that endeared Williams further into gamer hearts. When the Nintendo 3DS remake arrived on the scene, Williams and his daughter Zelda took part in a series of advertisements for the fan-favorite Nintendo game. It was there we learned Williams was not just an avid gamer, but also that he named his own daughter after the leading lady in The Legend of Zelda franchise.

Williams played more than Zelda games, too, and offered quite a bit of insight into his gaming habits during a Reddit AMA in 2013. There he admitted to being a fan of the Call of Duty franchise, Warhammer 40K, and even expressed his interest in the (then) upcoming releases of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Robin Williams is survived by his wife and three children. Our condolences to his family, and our gratitude to him for so many fond memories.
