PlayStation 4 Maintains Number One Sales Spot for Eighth Straight Month

August's NPD numbers are out, and you'll probably be very surprised to learn almost nothing has changed. The PlayStation 4 is still top of the pops, and like every August for the past decade, Madden has surged to the front of the software pack.

According to the NPD's August figures (as reported by VentureBeat), Sony's PlayStation 4 maintained its domination of console sales for the eighth straight month. While official numbers weren't disclosed, PlayStation's senior vice president of marketing Guy Longworth did confirm to the site the PS4's elite status. Even though Microsoft's Xbox One still hasn't topped the PS4 on a per-month basis, Microsoft did see continued growth for its console at retail. "Xbox One sales are on a positive trajectory, nearly doubling sales in August in the U.S. compared to July due in part to strong demand for the Xbox One Madden NFL 15 bundle," the company said in a statement.

All told, with the first ten months now in the books, it appears both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are selling at a clip that's 70 percent faster than last generation's counterparts.

As for software, August is typically dominated by Madden NFL, and this year proved no exception to that rule. However, software sales overall were down 21 percent, with August 2014 recording just $231.6 million compared to August 2013's $293.4 million. Likely reasoning? Lack of big titles in August, but the fact that hardware sales are up 116 percent year-on-year factors in, too. People spent $196.2 million on hardware last month.
